September 6, 2023 UGPP Workshop 5 min read

Islamabad, 04–06 September 2023. A three-day Annual Review and Planning Workshop was conducted by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination (MoCC&EC), in collaboration with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Pakistan, as part of the Upscaling Green Pakistan Program, Phase-1.

The workshop had the participation of senior forestry and wildlife professionals from all over the country. Provincial Project Directors overseeing the Forestry and Wildlife components of the Upscaling Green Pakistan Program, along with their respective teams, also attended the event.

The primary objectives of the workshop were to review progress, address ongoing challenges, and extract lessons from the programme's implementation thus far. It also focused on planning and prioritizing activities for the 2023–2024 year and developing a long-term strategy for the next four years to further expand the Green Pakistan initiative.

Experts from IUCN, FAO, and WWF Pakistan worked closely with MoCC&EC to devise strategies for the programme's future interventions.

In support of independent third-party monitoring, the IUCN/FAO/WWF Consortium compiled a detailed reference guide titled "Guidelines and Lists of Suitable Tree Species for Plantation in Different Silvo-Ecological Zones of Pakistan." On September 6, 2023, the Ministry of Climate Change and the Project Management Unit jointly launched these guidelines.

Mr. Faiz Ali Khan, the National Project Director of UGPP, emphasized that the Green Pakistan Programme will be the primary beneficiary of these newly developed guidelines and urged all provincial project directors to adopt this document for future plantation initiatives.
